Break Even Calculator
Find out exactly how many units you need to sell — and how much revenue you need — to cover your costs and break even.
How to use the Break Even Calculator
Enter your total fixed costs (rent, salaries, software — costs that don't change with sales volume).
Enter the price you sell each unit for.
Enter the variable cost to produce or deliver each unit (materials, packaging, payment fees).
The calculator shows how many units you need to sell to break even, and the equivalent revenue.
Break-Even Formula
Break-even units = Fixed Costs ÷ (Price per unit − Variable cost per unit)Example
- 1.Fixed costs: $10,000/month
- 2.Price per unit: $50
- 3.Variable cost per unit: $30
- 4.Break-even = $10,000 ÷ ($50 − $30) = 500 units
- 5.Break-even revenue = 500 × $50 = $25,000
Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently asked questions about the Break Even Calculator
What if price and variable cost are equal?+
If your price per unit equals your variable cost per unit, you make no contribution margin on each sale and can never break even, no matter how many units you sell. You need to raise price or cut variable cost.
What counts as a fixed cost?+
Fixed costs stay roughly the same regardless of sales volume — rent, insurance, salaried staff and software subscriptions are typical examples.
